Apple Soars, Still More to Prove

Despite the fact it sold a record number of iPhones after its debut of its two newest models, MoneyShow's Jim Jubak, also of Jubak's Picks, still thinks the company has more to prove, in terms of meeting demand, if it expects to quell the skeptics.

Apple (AAPL) sold a record nine million iPhones in the weekend debut of the iPhone 5S and 5C models. That was way above the most pessimistic estimates from analysts of five million units, but also blew away optimistic Wall Street estimates of 6.5 to 7.75 million units.

And that has led the company to tell Wall Street it expects total revenue for the quarter (the fourth quarter of Apple's fiscal year) that ends on September 30 to come in at the high end of its earlier guidance of $34 million to $37 million in revenue. Gross margins, Apple said, will be near the high end of a range of 36% to 37%.

The stock closed up 4.97% yesterday. (Apple is a member of my Jubak's Picks portfolio.)

But that hasn't quieted the skeptics—nor should it. Apple still has to demonstrate that it can meet demand for the 5S, that led it to sell out in many stores over the weekend, in time to meet the end of the quarter, and in a way that doesn't damp overall sales momentum. And we still don't have numbers on sales of the cheaper 5C that tell us much of anything about how that model will sell against competing Android phones. With the 5C likely to appeal to current Android users—if it appeals to anyone—who have annual or two-year contracts on their existing phones, it will take a while before we know how much market share the 5C can claw back.

The gold 5S has emerged has a big seller, which could hurt Apple's revenue numbers for the September quarter. AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ), for example, had said they won't be able to ship gold iPhones until October. That might well cut into the revenue that Apple can claim for the period.

In other positive news for Apple, the company said that users had downloaded the new iOS 7 mobile operating system onto 200 million devices since September 18. That's twice the number in last year's operating system upgrade.

Insurance Products

The Insurance Products segment offers a range of protection products and services aimed at serving the financial needs of its customers throughout their lives. These pro! ducts are sold to individuals and corporations, as well as other institutions and their respective employees. It is organized in three businesses: Group Life, Individual Life and Non-Medical Health.

The Group Life insurance products and services include variable life, universal life, and term life products. It offer group insurance products as employer-paid benefits or as voluntary benefits where all or a portion of the premiums are paid by the employee. These group products and services also include employee paid supplemental life and are offered as standard products or may be tailored to meet specific customer needs.

The Individual Life insurance products and services include variable life, universal life, term life and whole life products. Additionally, through its broker-dealer affiliates, it offers a full range of mutual funds and other securities products. The products within both Group Life and Individual Life include Variable Life, Universal Life, Term Life and Whole Life. Variable life products provide insurance coverage through a contract that gives the policyholder the policyholder flexibility in investment choices and, depending on the product, in premium payments and coverage amounts, with certain guarantees. With variable life products, premiums and account balances can be directed by the policyholder into a variety of separate account investment options or directed to the Company�� general account. In the separate account investment options, the policyholder bears the entire risk of the investment results.

Universal life products provide insurance coverage on the same basis as variable life, except that premiums, and the resulting accumulated balances, are allocated only to the Company�� general account. Universal life products may allow the insured to increase or decrease the amount of death benefit coverage over the term of the contract and the owner to adjust the frequency and amount of premium payments.

Term life products provid! e a guara! nteed benefit upon the death of the insured for a specified time period in return for the periodic payment of premiums. Specified coverage periods range from one year to 30 years, but in no event are they longer than the period over, which premiums are paid. Death benefits may be level over the period or decreasing. Decreasing coverage is used principally to provide for loan repayment in the event of death. Premiums may be guaranteed at a level amount for the coverage period or may be non-level and non-guaranteed. Term insurance products are sometimes referred to as pure protection products, in that there are typically no savings or investment elements. Term contracts expire without value at the end of the coverage period when the insured party is still living.

Whole life products provide a guaranteed benefit upon the death of the insured in return for the periodic payment of a fixed premium over a predetermined period. Premium payments may be required for the entire life of the contract period, to a specified age or period, and may be level or change in accordance with a predetermined schedule. Whole life insurance includes policies that provide a participation feature in the form of dividends. Policyholders may receive dividends in cash or apply them to increase death benefits, increase cash values available upon surrender or reduce the premiums required to maintain the contract in-force.

The Non-Medical Health products and services include dental insurance, group short- and long-term disability, individual disability income, long-term care (LTC), critical illness and accidental death & dismemberment coverage. Other products and services include employer-sponsored auto and homeowners insurance provided through the Auto & Home segment and prepaid legal plans. The Company also sells administrative services-only (ASO) arrangements to some employers. The products in this area are Dental, Disability and Long-term Care (LTC). Dental products provide insurance and ASO plans that ass! ist emplo! yees, retirees and their families in maintaining oral health while reducing out-of-pocket expenses and providing superior customer service. Dental plans include the Preferred Dentist Program and the Dental Health Maintenance Organization. Disability products provide a benefit in the event of the disability of the insured. This benefit is in the form of monthly income paid until the insured reaches age 65. In addition to income replacement, the product may be used to provide for the payment of business overhead expenses for disabled business owners or mortgage payment protection. This is offered on both a group and individual basis. LTC products provide protection against the potentially high costs of LTC services. They generally pay benefits to insureds that need assistance with activities of daily living or have a cognitive impairment.

Retirement Products

The Retirement products segment includes a variety of variable and fixed annuities that are primarily sold to individuals and employees of corporations and other institutions. The products in this area are Variable Annuities and Fixed Annuities. Variable annuities provide for both asset accumulation and asset distribution needs. Variable annuities allow the contract holder to make deposits into various investment options in a separate account, as determined by the contract holder. The risks associated with such investment options are borne entirely by the contract holder, except where guaranteed minimum benefits are involved.

Fixed annuities provide for both asset accumulation and asset distribution needs. Fixed annuities do not allow the same investment flexibility provided by variable annuities, but provide guarantees related to the preservation of principal and interest credited.

Corporate Benefit Funding

The Corporate Benefit Funding segment includes a range of annuity and investment products, including, guaranteed interest products and other stable value products, income annuitie! s, and se! parate account contracts for the investment management of defined benefit and defined contribution plan assets. This segment also includes certain products to fund postretirement benefits and company, bank or trust owned life insurance used to finance non-qualified benefit programs for executives. The products in this area are Stable Value Products, Pensions Closeouts, Torts and Settlements, Capital Markets Investment Products and other Corporate Benefit Funding Products and Services. The Company offers general account guaranteed interest contracts, separate account guaranteed interest contracts, and similar products used to support the stable value option of defined contribution plans. It also offers private floating rate funding agreements that are used for money market funds, securities lending cash collateral portfolios and short-term investment funds.

The Company offers general account and separate account annuity products, generally in connection with the termination of defined benefit pension plans, both in the United States and the United Kingdom. It also offers partial risk transfer solutions that allow for partial transfers of pension liabilities and annuity products that include single premium buyouts. It offers strategies for complex litigation settlements, primarily structured settlement annuities. Under the Capital Markets Investment Products, the products offered include funding agreements, Federal Home Loan Bank advances and funding agreement-backed commercial paper. Under the Other Corporate Benefit Funding Products and Services, it offers specialized insurance products designed specifically to provide solutions for non-qualified benefit and retiree benefit funding purposes.

Auto & Home

The Auto & Home segment includes personal lines property and casualty insurance offered directly to employees at their employer�� worksite, as well as to individuals through a variety of retail distribution channels, including independent agents, property and casu! alty spec! ialists, direct response marketing and the individual distribution sales group. Auto & Home primarily sells auto insurance, which represented 67% of Auto & Home�� total net earned premiums in 2011. Homeowners and other insurance represented 33% of Auto & Home�� total net earned premiums in 2011. The products in this area are Auto Coverages and Homeowners and Other Coverages. Auto insurance policies provide coverage for private passenger automobiles, utility automobiles and vans, motorcycles, motor homes, antique or classic automobiles and trailers. Auto & Home offers traditional coverage, such as liability, uninsured motorist, no fault or personal injury protection, as well as collision and comprehensive. Homeowners��insurance policies provide protection for homeowners, renters, condominium owners and residential landlords against losses arising out of damage to dwellings and contents from a variety of perils, as well as coverage for liability arising from ownership or occupancy. During the year ended December 31, 2011, Collateral Mortgage, Ltd. (CHL) owns 16.8% of the common stock of TGI. Policies insured as part of a Modified Pool transaction have individual coverage, but an aggregate stop-loss limit applies to the entire group of insured loans. In addition, some of the Modified Pool transactions included deductibles representing a percentage of the total risk originated under which the Company pays no claims until the losses exceed the deductible amount. Modified Pool insurance consists of 20% of the Company's total insurance in force at December 31, 2011.

United States Operations

During 2011, the United States operations represented 54.4% of the Company�� net premiums. Canada Operations

During 2011, the Canada operations represented 11.4% of the Company�� net premiums. During 2011, approximately 85.2% of the recurring new business was written on an automatic basis. The Company operates in Canada through RGA Canada, a wholly owned subsidiary. RGA Canada is a life reinsurer in Canada, based on new individual life insurance production. It assists clients with capital management and mortality and morbidity risk management and is primarily engaged in traditional individual life reinsurance, as well as creditor, group life and health, critical illness, and longev! ity reins! urance. Creditor insurance covers the outstanding balance on personal, mortgage or commercial loans in the event of death, disability or critical illness and is shorter in duration than traditional life insurance. Europe & South Africa Operations

During 2011, the Europe & South Africa operations represented 16.3% of the Company�� net premiums. This segment serves clients from subsidiaries, licensed branch offices and/or representative offices located in France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, South Africa, Spain, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom. These offices operate primarily through the Company�� subsidiaries RGA International and RGA South Africa. The principal types of reinsurance for this segment include life and health products through yearly renewable term and coinsurance agreements, the reinsurance of critical illness coverage, which provides a benefit in the event of the diagnosis of a pre-defined critical illness and the reinsurance of longevity risk related to payout annuities. The reinsurance agreements of critical illness coverage may be either facultative or automatic agreements. Premiums earned from critical illness coverage represented 20.5% of the total net premiums for this segment during 2011. During 2011, the United Kingdom operations generated approximately 62.9% of the segment�� gross premiums.

Asia Pacific Operations

During 2011, the Asia Pacific operations represented 17.8% of the Company�� net premiums. The Company has a presence in the Asia Pacific region with licensed branch offices and/or representative offices in Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, New Zealand, Labuan (Malaysia) and the People�� Republic of China. The principal types of reinsurance for this segment include life, critical illness, health, disability income, superannuation, and financial reinsurance. Superannuation is the Australian government mandated c! ompulsory! retirement savings program. Superannuation funds accumulate retirement funds for employees, and in addition, offer life and disability insurance coverage. Reinsurance agreements may be either facultative or automatic agreements covering primarily individual risks and, in some markets, group risks. During 2011, the Australian operations generated approximately 52.3% of the total gross premiums for the Asia Pacific operations. The Hong Kong, Labuan, Japan, Taiwan, China and South Korea offices provide full reinsurance services and are supported by the Company�� United States and International Division Sydney office.

Corporate and Other

Corporate and Other operations include investment income from invested assets not allocated to support segment operations and undeployed proceeds from the Company�� capital raising efforts, in addition to unallocated investment related gains or losses. Corporate expenses consist of the offset to capital charges allocated to the operating segments within the policy acquisition costs and other insurance expenses line item, unallocated overhead and executive costs, and interest expense related to debt.     2. Reinsurance Group of America (NYSE: RGA) I've been singing the praises of insurance stocks throughout 2013, and though they have started to make solid upward moves, they are still quite undervalued. As long as their balance sheets are worth more than the public market value of their stocks, then you should pounce.

    This reinsurer (which insures the insurance companies against catastrophic payouts) is a perfect example. At the end of the second quarter, tangible book value stood at $82.97 a share. That's roughly 24% above the current stock price. And RGA is doing what any "below book" stock should do: buying back shares. The current buyback will be fueled by a $400 investment that should shrink shares outstanding by more than 5%.

Property and Casualty Insurance Business

The Company's property and casualty insurance business operations are primarily conducted through the Preferred, Specialty and Direct segments. In addition, the Life and Health Insurance segment�� career agents also sell property insurance to its customers. Its insurance subsidiaries operating in the Preferred, Specialty and Direct segments provide automobile, homeowners, fire, and other types of property and casualty insurance to individuals and commercial automobile insurance to businesses. During the year ended December 31, 2011, automobile insurance in these segments accounted for 54% of its consolidated insurance premiums earned from continuing operations, and 47% of its consolidated revenues from continuing operations. During 2011, homeowners insurance in these segments accounted for 14% of its consolidated insurance premiums earned from continuing operations, and 11% of its consolidated revenues from continuing operations.

Preferred and Specialty segments distribute their products through independent agents who are paid commissions for their services. Direct segment distributes its products directly to consumers and through employer-sponsored voluntary benefit programs and other affinity relationships.! Preferred, based in Jacksonville, Florida, conducts business in 38 states and the District of Columbia. During 2011, the states, which provided over half of the premium revenues in Preferred segment included New York (19%), California (12%), North Carolina (13%) and Texas (10%). Preferred segment primarily sells preferred and standard risk automobile and homeowners insurance. During 2011, Preferred�� insurance products accounted for 53% of the aggregate insurance premium revenues of the Company�� property and casualty insurance business. Its products are marketed by approximately 2,700 independent insurance agents. Specialty, based in Dallas, Texas, conducts business in 21 states, principally in the southwest and western United States. During 2011, the states, which provided more than three-fourths of the premium revenues in Specialty segment included California (42%), Texas (18%), Washington (8%), Louisiana (4%) and Oregon (3%). Specialty provides personal and commercial automobile insurance. During 2011, Specialty�� insurance products accounted for 28% of the aggregate insurance premium revenues of the Company�� property and casualty insurance business. Specialty�� products are marketed through approximately 8,000 independent agents and brokers.

Direct, based in Chicago, Illinois, markets personal automobile, homeowners and renters insurance through a range of direct-to-consumer Websites, including its own Websites, marketing partners, employer and other affinity-sponsored relationships. The Direct segment�� automobile insurance products are available in 48 states and the District of Columbia. During 2011, the states, which provided approximately two-thirds of the premium revenues in Unitrin Direct segment included Florida (12%), New York (15%), California (10%), Texas (5%), Connecticut (5%), Michigan (8%), Pennsylvania (5%) and Georgia (5%). During 2011, Direct�� insurance products accounted for 14% of the aggregate insurance premium revenues of its property and casualty i! nsurance ! business.. Direct also offers homeowners and renters insurance across 47states and the District of Columbia, complementing its direct automobile insurance business. The Company manages its exposure to catastrophes and other natural disasters through a combination of geographical diversification, restrictions on the amount and location of new business production in certain regions, and reinsurance. Life and Health Insurance Business

The Company�� Life and Health Insurance segment consists of Kemper�� wholly owned subsidiaries, United Insurance Company of America (United Insurance), The Reliable Life Insurance Company (Reliable), Union National Life Insurance Company (Union National Life), Mutual Savings Life Insurance Company (Mutual Savings Life), United Casualty Insurance Company of America (United Casualty), Union National Fire Insurance Company (Union National Fire), Mutual Savings Fire Insurance Company (Mutual Savings Fire) and Reserve National Insurance Company (Reserve National). Their product is ordinary life insurance, including permanent and term insurance. Face amounts of these policies are lower than those of policies sold to higher income customers by other companies in the life insurance industry. Approximately 79% of the Life and Health Insurance segment�� premium revenues are generated by the Kemper Home Service Companies. The Life and Health Insurance segment�� career agents also distribute certain property insurance products. Reserve National, based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, is licensed in 35 states throughout the south, southwest and midwest, and specializes in the sale of Medicare Supplement insurance and limited health insurance coverages, such as fixed indemnity, dental and vision, and accident-only plans, primarily to individuals in rural areas where access to a multitude of health plan options is less prevalent.

SpaceX to unveil spacecraft to ferry astronauts

LOS ANGELES (AP) — SpaceX, which has flown unmanned cargo capsules to the International Space Station, planned to unveil a new spacecraft Thursday designed to ferry astronauts to low-Earth orbit.

The Southern California-based rocket builder, founded by billionaire Elon Musk, is one of several private companies vying to develop "space taxis" for NASA to replace the retired space shuttle fleet.

The reveal will take place at SpaceX's headquarters near Los Angeles International Airport.

In a NASA briefing with reporters last year, Musk said the manned version would look futuristic like an "alien spaceship" with side-mounted thrusters, landings legs that pop out and large windows for astronauts to marvel at Earth's curvature.

"It's going to be cool," Musk said at the time.

Since the shuttle fleet retired in 2011, NASA has depended on Russian rockets to transport astronauts to orbit and back, paying nearly $71 million per seat. The space agency has said it wants U.S. companies to fill the void by 2017 and has doled out seed money to spur innovation.

SpaceX — short for Space Exploration Technologies Corp. — has made four cargo runs to the giant orbiting outpost some 200 miles above Earth. Just last month, its Dragon capsule splashed into the Pacific, returning nearly 2 tons of science experiments and old equipment.

Companies competing for the right to ferry station astronauts need to design a spacecraft that can seat a crew of four or more and be equipped with life support systems and an escape hatch in case of emergency. SpaceX has said it's designing a seven-seat spacecraft.

SpaceX and longtime NASA contractor Boeing are "more or less neck and neck" in the competition, but there's a long way to go before astronauts can rocket out of the atmosphere on private spacecraft, said John Logsdon, professor emeritus of political science and international affairs at George Washington University.

Logsdon said progress by private companies is slower than anticip! ated mainly because Congress has not fully funded NASA's budget request for the effort. He said it's important for the U.S. to wean its reliance on Russia given the political tension over the annexation of Crimea.

"It's essential to have our own capability to transport people to space," he said. "This is an important step in that direction."

5 Stocks Under-$10 Setting Up to Trade Higher

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- There isn't a day that goes by on Wall Street when certain stocks trading for $10 a share or less don't experience massive spikes higher. Traders savvy enough to follow the low-priced names and trade them with discipline and sound risk management are banking ridiculous coin on a regular basis.

Just take a look at some of the hot movers in the under-$10 complex from Thursday, including Oclaro (OCLR), which skyrocketed higher by 40%; GenVec (GNVC), which soared higher by 33%; Ivanhoe Energy (IVAN), which ripped higher by 18%; and CAMAC Energy (CAK), which trended up by 12%. You don't even have to catch the entire move in lower-priced stocks such as these to make outsized returns when trading.

One low-priced stock that recently skyrocketed higher was pharmaceuticals player Neuralstem (CUR), which I highlighted in Sept. 06's "5 Stocks Setting Up to Break Out" at $1.80 per share. I mentioned in that piece that shares of CUR were uptrending strong over the last six months, with the stock soaring higher from its low $1 a share to its high of $1.79 a share. Shares of CUR had recently pulled back to its 50-day moving average at $1.59 a share, and the stock was starting to bounce strongly off that level. That move was quickly spiking shares of CUR within range of triggering a big breakout trade above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.75 to $1.79 a share.

Guess what happened? Shares of CUR didn't wait long to trigger that breakout, since the stock closed the same day I wrote that piece at $1.85 a share. That close was also accompanied by heavy upside volume, which was bullish technical price action. Shares of CUR continued to surge higher the next two trading sessions, with the stock hitting a new 52-week high of $2.52 a share. That's a massive gain of close to 40% in just a few trading sessions for anyone who played that breakout. I don't think CUR is done going higher here either, so traders should look for more upside in this stock if it can manage to take out $2.38 to its 52-week high at $2.52 a share with strong upside volume.

Low-priced stocks are something that I tweet about on a regular basis. I frequently flag high-probability setups, breakout candidates and low-priced stocks that are acting technically bullish. I like to hunt for low-priced stocks that are showing bullish price and volume trends, since that increases the probability of those stocks heading higher. These setups often produce monster moves higher in very short time frames.

I'm not as eager to recommend investing long-term in stocks that trade less than $10 a share because these names can be very speculative, and the odds for picking the long-term winners aren't great. But I definitely love to trade stocks that are priced below $10. I like to view them as a trading vehicle with lots of volatility and lots of upside when the trade is timed right.

When I trade under-$10 names, I do it almost entirely based off of the charts and technical analysis. I also like to find under-$10 names with a catalyst, but that's secondary to the chart and volume patterns.

With that in mind, here's a look at several under-$10 stocks that look poised to potentially trade higher from current levels.

Durect

One under-$10 name that's starting to move within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Durect (DRRX), which develops pharmaceutical products based on its proprietary drug delivery technology platforms. This stock is off to a hot start in 2013, with shares up sharply by 41%.

If you take a look at the chart for Durect, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways for the last two months and change, with shares moving between $1 on the downside and $1.34 on the upside. Shares of DRRX have now started to flirt with that $1.34 major resistance level on Thursday, since the stock has hit an intraday high of $1.35 a share with strong upside volume flows. This could be signaling that shares of DRRX are ready to break out above the upper-end of its recent range and trend substantially higher.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in DRRX if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.34 to $1.35 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 679,480 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then DRRX will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from May that started near $1.80 a share. If DRRX gets into that gap with volume, then this stock could easily trend north of $2 a share.

Traders can look to buy DRRX off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at its 50-day moving average of $1.16 a share or its 200-day moving average at $1.11 a share. One can also buy DRRX off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Echo Therapeutics

Another under-$10 health care player that's quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Echo Therapeutics (ECTE), which is a transdermal medical device company with skin permeation technology. This stock has been destroyed by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off huge by 70%.

If you take a look at the chart for Echo Therapeutics, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last month, with shares moving higher from its low of $2.14 to its intraday high of $3.06 a share. During that uptrend, shares of ECTE have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has pushed shares of ECTE back above its 50-day moving average at $2.65 a share, and it's just starting to push ECTE into breakout territory, since the stock has cleared some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.98 to $2.99 a share. That move is quickly pushing shares of ECTE within range of triggering an even bigger breakout trade.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in ECTE if it manages to break out above some major near-term overhead resistance at $3.30 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that registers near or above its three-month average volume of 211,103 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ECTE will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $4 to $4.50 a share, or possibly even $5 to $6 a share.

Traders can look to buy ECTE off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $2.65 a share, or right below more near-term support at $2.50 a share. One can also buy ECTE off strength once it clears $3.30 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

EnteroMedics

One under-$10 health care player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade is EnteroMedics (ETRM), which is engaged in design and development of devices that use neuroblocking technology to treat obesity, its associated co-morbidities and other gastrointestinal disorders. This stock has been hit hard by the sellers so far in 2013, with shares off sharply by 59%.

If you take a look at the chart for EnteroMedics, you'll notice that this stock recently formed a double bottom chart pattern $1 to $1.01 a share. Following that bottom, shares of ETRM have started to rip higher and trend back above its 50-day moving average at $1.08 a share with strong upside volume flows. This move is quickly pushing ETRM within range of triggering a big near-term breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ETRM if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistances levels at $1.14 to $1.19 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 584,986 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ETRM will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $1.37 to $1.47 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give ETRM a chance to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from February that started above $3 a share.

Traders can look to buy ETRM off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of $1.08 a share, or below more key near-term support at $1 a share. One can also buy ETRM off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Tsakos Energy Navigation

Another under-$10 name in the energy space that's starting to move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Tsakos Energy Navigation (TNR), which is a provider of seaborne crude oil and petroleum product transportation services. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 35%.

If you take a look at the chart for Tsakos Energy Navigation, you'll notice that this stock just recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $4.50 to $4.55 a share. Following that bottom, shares of TNP have started to uptrend and move back above its 50-day moving average of $4.85 a share. That move is quickly pushing shares of TNP within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in TNP if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $5.09 to $5.15 a share and then once it takes out more resistance at $5.69 to its 52-week high at $6.19 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 184,898 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then TNP will set up to enter new 52-week high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are its next major overhead resistance levels at $7 to $8.30 a share.

Traders can look to buy TNP off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below those key near-term support levels at $4.55 to $4.50 a share. One can also buy TNP off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

IntelliPharmaCeutics International

One final under-$10 pharmaceuticals player that potentially looks ready to trend significantly higher IntelliPharmaCeutics International (IPCI), which business activities include research, development, and commercialization of controlled-release and targeted pharmaceutical products.. This stock has been under selling pressure so far in 2013, with shares off by 19.6%.

If you take a look at the chart for the IntelliPharmaCeutics International, you'll notice that this stock has sold off from its August high of $2.39 a share to its recent low of $1.81 a share. That selloff did not take shares of IPCI to a lower low, which would have only occurred if the stock broke below $1.76 a share. Shares of IPCI have now started to trend back above its 50-day moving average at $1.95 a share and its flirting here with its 200-day moving average at $2.01 a share. That move is starting to push shares of IPCI within range of triggering a big breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in IPCI if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.20 to $2.39 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 175,680 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then IPCI will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.80 to its 52-week high at $3.72 a share.

Traders can look to buy IPCI off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its recent low of $1.81 a share. One can also buy PCI off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

It's on: Apple cranks up the Beats for $3 billion

CUPERTINO, Calif. — In an unprecedented teaming of tech brains and musical ears, Apple confirmed Wednesday that it was doubling down on the digital music space it pioneered with iTunes by purchasing Beats Electronics for $3 billion, of which $400 million will vest over time.

"We're gaining rare talent, a fast-growing subscription service and premium headphones that have done incredibly well, but none of those are the reason for doing this deal," says Apple CEO Tim Cook of the deal, which nabs both Beats' popular line of headphones and its nascent streaming music service. "It's the future we're betting on."

Cook met with USA TODAY along with iTunes chief Eddy Cue and Beats co-founders Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine.

"I've been working with Apple on projects for 11 years," says Iovine. "You feel like when you walk in here, these guys get what we do. Will our products get better? Absolutely; we want our stuff to be made by Apple. But mostly, it's about feeling that these guys can bridge the gap between the tech and music worlds."

Cook says Iovine and Dr. Dre will spend more time in Silicon Valley and that the Beats brand will remain intact. While declining to outline specific next steps, Cook said expanding the reach of Beats' electronics and music service are among top priorities.

"This is about music and its importance to society and to Apple," he says. "We've found kindred spirits in Jimmy and Dre, and we're going to advance what they've done to a whole different level."

Apple stock was little changed on the news, which had been expected.

The deal represents perhaps Apple's brashest fiscal move since buying Steve Jobs' NeXT computer company in 1997. But while that deal triggered Apple's rebirth, this one comes at a critical juncture. Consumers and analysts alike are looking to see if Apple can reclaim the spotlight in the wake of a product and advertising fusillade from rival Samsung.

"It provides Beats with the market clout, cachet, credibility and deep pocket! s that can take (them) to an even larger audience," says Ted Cohen, managing partner of TAG Strategy, a digital entertainment consultancy firm. Meanwhile, "it gives (Apple) real rock stars in Iovine and Dr. Dre."

By welcoming Beats into his portfolio, Apple CEO Cook is acknowledging a shift away from its pioneering iTunes pay-per-song model and toward streaming audio. He also is side-stepping founder Jobs' insistence that all Apple hits be crafted in-house.

Cook shrugged off suggestions that the purchase was in response to charges of stagnation.

"This is a big deal. But to put it in some perspective, we acquired 15 companies last year and 12 this year, some 27 in 18 months," he says. "But this one is all about music, which we've always felt is in our veins, and we've always appreciated that technology alone was not enough."

Beyond its industry significance, the purchase could vault Iovine and Dr. Dre into the billionaire club, which would make the latter the first rapper with a 10-digit net worth. Dr. Dre, born Andre Young, was a pioneering force in the Los Angeles rap scene in the '80s and '90s. Iovine first made his name engineering records for the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty, later becoming chairman of Interscope-Geffen-A&M Records.

Dre, who remained quiet during much of the round-table conversation, just smiled at the suggestion: "Financially, I'm in a place I never dreamed of. Now, I'm just ready to get started with the work."

The purchase price might seem high, considering that Beats Music just launched in January, standing out for its emphasis on human vs. algorithm-centric curation. But it represents a fraction of Apple's $160 billion cash stockpile and is in line with other news-making purchases, including Google's $3.2 billion Nest buy and Facebook's $19 billion WhatsApp gamble.

With Beats Music, Apple is instantly in position to fight for market share in the lucrative subscription-based streaming audio category, which saw a 50% jump i! n revenue! last year to $1.1 billion, while download sales dropped 2% to just under $4 billion, according to IFPI, the global music industry association.

Perhaps as important, Apple's newest toy comes with built-in street cred dating to its 2006 founding.

Beats co-founders Iovine and Dr. Dre used their broad contacts to ensure that their headphones wound up on the skulls of top music and sports stars ranging from Lady Gaga to LeBron James. And when it came time to conjure up Beats Music, Iovine tapped Oscar-winning metal rocker Trent Reznor to guide the sonic ship.

"Jimmy's one of those guys who's always coming up with new ideas; he's never someone to let things just happen to him," says Gwen Stefani, whose garage band No Doubt was signed by Iovine. "What I love about him is he's all about the artist."

Stefani recalls the time No Doubt auditioned for Iovine in 1991. After a few songs, "he pulled me aside and said in five years, I'd be a star. And I thought, 'Uh, no, in five years, I'll have like 10 kids, and you're a bit weird.' Of course, he was right; in about that time, our song Don't Speak was a huge hit. Jimmy's a pioneer."

Iovine says he hasn't been able to say much about the impending to deal to his music industry friends, but the few he's confided in have shared the same emotion.

"They feel like one of them has gotten into a game where they can have impact, where what we do will be understood," he says. "We've managed to bridge those worlds, because we come from music, but we've worked in software and hardware."

Cook nods.

"Apple will be doing some great things in the near term that are exciting, and you're going to love them," he says, referencing the company's upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference starting June 2.

"But today's announcement is about the long term," he says. "Dre and Jimmy bring us the artists' lens. We've had that from a relationship point of view, but there's nothing like having that under our roof, that expert ear of audio. So wh! en you ta! ke all of those intangibles, you get excited."
