If You Like Bridgeline Digital, You'll Love This Company (BLIN, CLRX, WBMD)

Congratulations to anyone who owned shares of Bridgeline Digital Inc. (NASDAQ:BLIN) before today. You're now up 35% for the day so far, and still counting. The big pop from BLIN stemmed from the announcement that it scored a pretty significant deal with an organization consisting of nearly 4000 dentists and doctors. The terms of the deal are simple enough... Bridgeline Digital will host and service websites for the practitioners in the group for a period of three years, and in return, BLIN will receive $7 million.

It's yet another case of technology converging with healthcare, though truth be told, the Bridgeline only scratches the surface of how the digital world and the patient-care world can unite to create something greater than the sum of its parts. A little company called CollabRx Inc. (NASDAQ:CLRX) is taking it up a notch - maybe two notches - to turn the web into a guidance portal for oncologists seeking new and better treatment options for cancer patients. Among these options are drug trials that a caregiver may not even be aware of, were it not for this highly-specialized site CLRX has designed.

A comparison to WebMD Health Corp. (NASDAQ:WBMD) is conjured up almost immediately, but it's not a comparison an investor or patient would want to make. WBMD is primarily aimed at individuals who don't have a medical background, and are looking more for tips than for science. The CollabRx site is exclusively built for doctors (oncologists in particular) and diagnostic laboratories that need detailed information parsed out of a sea of data that could be overwhelming were it not curated and focused. Indeed, unlike WebMD or the kind of websites that Bridgeline Digital is going to provide for its new client, the information that's going to be found via CollabRx may be little more than gibberish to a layperson, but it will be highly instructive to doctors and caregivers.

That being said, even a detailed description of what the CollabRx application does still doesn't do it justice, as there's no frame of reference for investors to use as a baseline. To that end, only a snapshot of what the site does will adequately explain the importance of this tool to doctors.

The image immediately below is of the landing page specifically for doctors caring for lung cancer patients. By filling in the appropriate details, that doctor is taken to a new page that looks like the lower of the two images below. It's got treatment options, descriptions of appropriate therapies, and perhaps most important, more information about clinical trials that may well be the only viable hope for a particular cancer patient.

The timing for such a service has never been better either. The advent of molecular-level screening has allowed doctors to know more about a patient's cancer than even before. In fact, the amount of diagnostic data that has stemmed from genetic-based testing has reached overwhelming proportions, so much so that even the most astute of oncologists can't keep up with the variants, or with drug trials designed to treat certain variations of cancers. This tool/site finds those trials and explains all the options to a doctor that, frighteningly enough, he or she may not have even known about.

Almost needless to say (again), comparing CollabRx to what WebMD does or what Bridgeline Digital will be doing soon isn't even close to being a relevant comparison. There's nothing else out there like it. That's why Tagliach Brothers believes CLRX could drive $2.6 million in revenue in 2016, and by 2020, the annual top line could reach $16.5 million. Not bad for a $6.2 million organization that only finalized the first of its cancer information portals last quarter.

Why GameStop, TriNet Group, and Restoration Hardware Jumped Today

On Friday, investors responded positively to favorable economic news, with favorable readings on personal income and spending pointing to the resiliency of the American consumer, even in the face of tough winter conditions that many businesses have blamed for temporary shortfalls in revenue and earnings. Even though the broader market gave up most of its gains from earlier in the day, GameStop (NYSE: GME  ) , TriNet Group (NYSE: TNET  ) , and Restoration Hardware (NYSE: RH  ) all managed to hold onto large advances in their respective share prices going into the weekend.

GameStop jumped 9% Friday, more than making back its losses from yesterday following a quarterly report that initially disappointed investors. The video game retailer saw same-store sales rise 7.8%, but adjusted earnings fell 12%. Despite favorable guidance for 2014, investors worried about the prospect of tougher competition from Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT  ) and other retailers, as well as steps from video game makers to eliminate the need for GameStop's middleman services. Analysts at Sterne Agee accentuated the positives in GameStop's report today, with expectations that earnings growth and GameStop's investor day next month could send the stock higher this year if the video game industry generally prospers from the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Moreover, initiatives to broaden GameStop's scope to sell other electronics could be a good way to use its store base, even if other companies have struggled selling those electronics on their own.

Newly public TriNet Group rose another 11.5%, adding to its positive performance on Thursday in its first day of post-IPO trading. The human-resources outsourcing company is jumping onto the trend toward cloud-based office support, following in the footsteps of Workday (NYSE: WDAY  ) in its effort to cater to small- and medium-sized businesses searching for ways to support their employees without having full-time HR staff. With shares up a third from its offering price of $16 per share, TriNet has inspired solid support among investors hoping to cash in on the growth prospects that serving smaller enterprise customers offers.

Restoration Hardware soared 13% despite reporting weaker-than-expected sales in its holiday quarter. Shareholders responded favorably to positive guidance from the home-furnishings retailer, with earnings expectations for the current quarter that are 25% to 60% higher than the consensus forecast. The guidance signals better gross margins for Restoration Hardware, as revenue growth hasn't come in quite as strong as many had thought the company would manage. But with same-store sales growth of 24%, Restoration Hardware has come a long way from its brush with disaster just a few short years ago.

Pandora Hikes Prices; Spotify Offers a Deal to College Students

pandora.com Having Pandora (P) fish through its growing digital catalog to surprise music buffs with commercial-free tunes is getting more expensive. Pandora recently announced that the price for its Pandora One service will increase by 25 percent to $4.99 a month for new subscribers starting in May. Existing subscribers paying $3.99 a month will be able to continue at that rate, but the $36 a year premium plan will no longer be available. Will You Pay More? Unlike the groaning that followed the hike in Amazon.com's (AMZN) Prime, there has so far been minimal backlash for Pandora. That's because just 3.3 million of Pandora's 75.3 million active listeners pay for Pandora One. The other 72 million accept the ad blocks and the limited skips (Pandora limits free users to skipping six songs in an hour or 24 over the course of a day). Pandora perpetually tweaks its terms and limitations, but this is the first time that it has increased its Pandora One rate since it was introduced in 2009. Compared to satellite radio that has gone through a pair of increases since 2012 and the annual increases of most cable and satellite television providers, it's hard to paint Pandora as greedy. As Pandora explains in justifying the increase, the royalties that it pays to performers through SoundExchange for subscription listening have soared 53 percent over the past five years. Battle of the Bands It's probably just a coincidence that Spotify lowered its price to select users just days after Pandora's announced hike. Spotify announced on Tuesday that college students -- including two-year colleges and vocational schools -- could pay just $5 a month for its streaming service. It doubles to the $10 a month rate that everyone else pays after they graduate. Spotify is an on-demand platform that lets users pick the tracks that they want to hear and create play lists. Pandora is a music discovery service that crunches algorithms to serve up tracks that it thinks you will like based on your initial input and listening habits. However, it's still interesting that the two services will be priced nearly identically for college students, even though the ability to single out tracks among Spotify's millions of selections would be seen by many as superior. A cheaper Spotify for young listeners isn't Pandora's only problem. Apple (AAPL) introduced iTunes Radio in September, and it's a similar music discovery service that is free to use in its ad-supported form. Folks wanting to zap ads on iTunes Radio only need to pay $25 a year for iTunes Match.

Plug Power: What Goes Up…

Shares of Plug Power (PLUG) were not what Isaac Newton had in mind when he may or may not have coined the phrase, “What goes up must come down.” But what was true of the apple that may–or may not–have hit him on the head, is also true for Plug Power, one of the market’s most-volatile stocks.

REUTERS

Yesterday, Plug Power gained 49% after its CEO said it had signed a large deal with a major auto maker. The detail everyone seemed to miss, however, was that the Plug Power’s CEO Andy Marsh had made the same comment earlier this month during the company’s conference call following it’s earnings release.

As a result, Plug Power’s shares are tumbling. They’ve dropped 19% to $6.87 at 2:20 p.m. today–and Plug Power’s plunge has dragged FuelCell Energy (FCEL) down 15% to $2.48 and  Ballard Power Systems (BLDP) down 19% to $4.38.

Out of curiosity, I checked to see how Plug Power performed in days following gains. In 60 trading days this, shares of Plug Power have gained 31 times, and those gains were followed by a loss 17 times, or 55% of the time. The average Plug Power loss this year has been 7%; the average loss following an up day jumps to 9%.

Mobile Ad Spending Soars 75%

Spending on mobile advertising worldwide more than doubled in 2013 to $17.96 billion and 2014 growth is reckoned at 75% to a global total of $31.5 billion. The 2014 total represents about 25% of all spending on digital ads and the two big beneficiaries have been and will continue to be Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) and Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG). The duo combined to take more than two-thirds of the 2013 mobile ad spend.

Which vertical markets are spending the most and what are their goals? Millennial Media Inc. (NYSE: MM), which provides data analysis to advertisers, has just released a report on mobile ad spending in 2013 by vertical market and by advertisers' goals. The data on ad spending was published by eMarketer last week.

According to Millennial Media, the top five vertical markets ranked by 2013 spending are entertainment, retail, telecommunications, finance and consumer goods. Retail and entertainment switched positions at the top of the list and consumer goods replace automotive spending at number 5.

Spending on consumer goods advertising rose 134% in 2014, but the biggest increase in year-over-year spending came in sports advertising, up nearly 500%.

Ad campaign goals also shifted in 2013, with site/mobile traffic replacing sustained in-market presence as the top goal — 30% of all 2013 spending was directed at traffic growth, up from 14% in 2012. Brand awareness campaigns increase from 14% to 22% year-over-year, while in-market presence campaigns fell from 39% to 24%.

Using rich media and video ads boosted click-through rates by 350% in automotive advertising when compared with standard banner ads. Education ads also saw a boost of 350% with rich media and video, while technology advertising saw a rise of 290% and consumer goods and travel each saw a rise of 260%.

The top apps for 2013 were games, music & entertainment, communications, productivity & tools and mobile social media. The top five were the same as in 2012, although the order of the last three changed.

Viewed by operating system platform, Android grew its share from 48% to 54% and iOS from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) grew its share from 32% to 38%. BlackBerry Ltd. (NASDAQ: BBRY) saw its share fall from 16% to 7% and Microsoft Corp.’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) Windows' share fell from 3% to 1%.

According to eMarketer, Facebook grew its revenue from mobile advertising from 11% of the company's total in 2012 to 45.1% in 2013, and eMarketer forecasts that mobile ad spending will comprise 63.4% of Facebook's digital ad revenue in 2014.

Google garnered 23.1% of its total 2013 ad revenues from mobile; that’s expected to rise to 33.8% in 2014. The not-so-good news for Google is that eMarketer expects desktop search to post a significant decline in 2014. The research firm said desktop search ad spending grew just 2.3% in 2013, and it expects spending to decline by $1.4 billion, or 9.4%, in 2014. Google's ad revenues from desktop search accounted for 76.4% of search ad revenues in 2013. That is predicted to decline to 66.3% this year.

Krantz: Brokers' fee gimmick can really rob you

USA TODAY markets reporter Matt Krantz answers a different reader question every weekday. To submit a question, e-mail Matt at mkrantz@usatoday.com.

Q: Is my broker tricking me by selling investments with high fees?

A: Brokers face endless temptations. And pushing their clients into investments with high fees are one of them.

Investors often seek so-called free advice from brokers and other financial advisers. But investors often forget, while the financial plan might be free, the brokers are finding other ways to make money for their time. Understanding the business model of a person giving you advice is essential.

One of brokers' favorite ways to make money, without raising the suspicion of investors, is by selling investments with higher fees. Doing so might enrich the broker in several ways, including commissions or sales loads. These forms of payment are useful for brokers because they allow them to get paid, but at the same time, still allows them to offer "free" or low cost financial services to clients. Worse yet, a broker might charge for their advice, and, still put the client in a high-fee investment.

The good news is that it's easy to check if this is happening to you. You'll want to look up the fees charged by any investment at a financial Web site like USA TODAY's Money section. If the fee is higher than what's charged on similar investments, it's time to ask your broker some hard questions.

Hertz Global: Earnings Don’t Matter, Just Buy the Stock

Hertz Global missed earnings forecasts today and offered disappointing guidance. It’s time to buy the stock, says MKM Partners.

MKM analysts Christopher Agnew and Bradford Dalinka explain why their recommendation isn’t as contrarian as it appears:

Contradictory? We think not: (1) Expectations weren't high into the quarter. Guidance was expected to be conservative and although a little light, the top-end includes $2.00. (2) The issues in 4Q in our view are transitory (DTG integration/over-fleeting related) and will pass in 2Q14. [Hertz Global] expects fleet to be rightsized by the end of 1Q, which is a positive. (3) Industry fundamentals are robust (note peer Avis Budget’s (CAR) results and guidance. (4) The [Hertz Equipment Rental Corp.] spin is a clear positive and, although expected, the details are better than expected, particularly share repurchase.

The timing of Hertz’s decision to spinoff HERC–so soon after United Rentals’ (URI) acquisition of  National Pump–surely caught some analysts by surprise but should be the big catalyst, Barron’s Teresa Rivas noted yesterday.

Shares of Hertz Global have gained 1.2% to $27.55 at 1:16 p.m., while Avis Budget Group has jumped 2.9% to $48.25 and United Rentals has advanced 0.5% to $91.34.

Buffalo Wild Wings: Spicy Pick

Our latest featured breakout idea is a company that operates a chain of restaurants featuring chicken wings, notes Leo Fasciocco, breakout stock specialist and editor of Ticker Tape Digest.

Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD) has annual revenues of $1.3 billion. Its owned and franchised restaurants feature a variety of boldly flavored, made-to-order menu items, including Buffalo, New York-style chicken wings spun in one of their signature sauces.

The widespread appeal of the company's concept establishes its restaurants as an inviting, neighborhood destination. The concept evolved from a university environment.

BWLD's stock came public in late 2003 and traded around $11. The stock hit a peak of $47 in 2007, the top in the prior bull market. BWLD then pulled back to as low as $14.50 in 2008, before soaring to an all-time high of $152.52 in November of last year.

We see a key driver for a potential breakout being the prospect of strong earnings for the upcoming first quarter. The Street is forecasting a 55% surge in profits to $1.35 a share from 87 cents a share a year ago. The highest estimate on the Street is at $1.49 a share.

Overall, earnings for the year should climb 28% to $4.85 a share from the $3.79 the year before. The stock sells with a price-earnings ratio of 30. That is high for a restaurant stock, but okay with BWLD because of the strong earnings outlook this year.

The largest fund holder is 5-star rated Fidelity Growth Company Fund with a big 7% stake. A key buyer recently was 4-star rated ClearBridge Small-Cap Growth Fund, which purchased 40,490 shares. It is the second largest fund holder with a 2% stake.

We suggest accumulation of a partial stake in BWLD with further buying to be done on a breakout over $152.60. We are then targeting the stock for a move to $180. There is also a chance for a stock split that could push the stock higher.

Gym faces lawsuit over Muslim head covering

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A gym in Albuquerque refused to let a Muslim woman wear her religious head covering when she tried to work out, according to a new lawsuit against the company.

An attorney for Tarainia McDaniel, 37, recently filed the lawsuit in a New Mexico district court stemming from a 2011 clash at a Planet Fitness that prevented McDaniel from using the gym while wearing the head covering, even though court documents said another Planet Fitness in the area had previously let her do so, theAlbuquerque Journal reports.

McDaniel joined the New Hampshire-based gym chain Planet Fitness in Albuquerque on a two-year contract and later transferred to another location, according to the lawsuit.

On Oct. 3, 2011, she was turned away at her new gym and was told the informal head covering didn't meet its dress code, the lawsuit states. The gym had a sign that said "no jeans, work boots, bandanas, skull caps or revealing apparel."

McDaniel said she asked to be allowed to wear the informal head covering to accommodate her Muslim faith, and she even asked if she should come back wearing a formal head covering known as the hijab, according to the lawsuit.

But the gym denied her requests, the lawsuit states.

Planet Fitness attorney Erika Anderson said the head covering violates the gym's dress-code policy. "My client's position is that they didn't know the head covering was for religious purposes," Anderson said.

Anderson said she could not comment further on pending litigation.

In a statement, the company said gyms take into account members' religious affiliations. "At Planet Fitness, our policy is, and has always been, that members are allowed to wear head scarves for religious reasons in our clubs," the company said.

McDaniel's civil lawsuit, filed under the New Mexico Human Rights Act and the Unfair Practices Act, alleges that Planet Fitness illegally based the decision to deny her access upon her religion, or alternatively upon her race — she is Af! rican-American — and that the gym had no legitimate reason to deny her entry.

Planet Fitness, in its formal answer to the claims, denies violations of either the Human Rights Act or Unfair Practices Act. It says McDaniel failed to participate in good faith and that the company has legitimate business reasons for its practice as well as measures to prevent discrimination.

Planet Fitness has run into other controversies about its rules.

The KTVU TV station in Oakland, Calif., reports that a woman on Wednesday was asked to cover up while working out at a Planet Fitness in Richmond, Calif., because her body was too intimidating to others at the gym. A Planet Fitness spokesperson told the station that the company "strives to make everyone feel comfortable" and says the dress code is at the discretion of the staff and manager.

In 2006, Albert Argibay of Beacon, N.Y. was escorted by police officers from a gym for grunting, which is against Planet Fitness' rules for maintaining a non-intimidating atmosphere.

According to McDaniel's deposition, she said the Quran "is pretty specific on covering your hair" and dressing modestly in clothes that fit loosely.

In the deposition, Anderson asked if McDaniel recalled the sign posted at Planet Fitness that said "no jeans, work boots, bandanas, skull caps or revealing apparel."

According to the transcript, McDaniel acknowledged seeing the sign. But she added, "I already (had) made it known before I signed the contract that I covered my hair. I had on (what) I call a head covering. I guess for the sake of the record, they're referring to it as a head covering."

When Anderson asked if she told them she was Muslim, McDaniel replied, "I sure did."

In 2013, a federal appeals court dismissed claims by an Oklahoma Muslim woman who said she was not hired by retailer Abercrombie & Fitch because her headscarf conflicted with the company's dress code. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleged in a lawsuit that Sam! antha Ela! uf, then 17, wasn't hired in 2008 at an Abercrombie store in Tulsa's Woodland Hills Mall because her hijab violated the retailer's "Look Policy."

But the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Elauf never told Abercrombie she needed a religious accommodation, even though she was wearing the headscarf during her interview.

The Ohio-based company changed its policy four years ago. It recently settled similar lawsuits in California.

Sally Beauty says data breach hit under 25,000

Yet another retailer is fessing-up with some details of a data snafu.

Sally Beauty, one of the world's largest retailers of professional beauty products, is reporting that a security breach discovered on March 5, affected fewer than 25,000 a credit and debit card accounts.

The Denton, Texas-based seller of beauty supplies says it is pursuing its investigation with a forensics firm and says that it's working with the U.S. Secret Service.

"We take this criminal activity very seriously," the company said in a statement. "We continue to work diligently with Verizon on this investigation and are taking necessary actions and precautions to mitigate and remediate the issues caused by this security incident. In addition, we are working with the United States Secret Service on their preliminary investigation into the matter."

WHAT TO DO: Protecting yourself from identity theft

For the nation's retailers, data breaches have become an explosive issue -- and a driver of serious consumer angst -- since Target reported a massive security breach shortly before Christmas. Other major retailers, including Neiman Marcus, have reported data breaches since the holiday season.

It's become a key concern for consumers, and some recent reports even show the data snafu may be cutting into customer traffic at Target stores as some concerned customers shop elsewhere.

Sally Beauty currently owns and operates more than 2,800 Sally Beauty Supply stores worldwide, including stores in every state in the United States; Puerto Rico and Canada. Sally Beauty Supply offers over 6,000 professional quality products for hair, skin and nails to retail customers and salon professionals.

The company has loyalty discount programs, such as the Beauty Club Card, for non-professional customers and the Sally ProCard for professional customers.

10 Best Oil Service Stocks To Invest In 2014

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Schlumberger (SLB) rose 1% to $90.10 on Tuesday following a positive note about the oil services sector from Deutsche Bank analysts.

The firm's $27 target for Nabors is 60% higher than the stock's current value.

Patterson-UTI Energy (PTEN) and Pioneer Energy (PES) were also mentioned as companies that could see gains in the coming year.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Carroll]

That's not the case for the week's biggest loser, however. Idenix Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: IDIX  ) shares plunged by more than 31% this week after Friday's 30% nosedive, completely wiping out this stock's year-to-date gains. Thank the FDA for this one. after the agency requested more safety information from the company's developmental hepatitis-C oral drug IDX20963. The drug's still in preclinical stages, but the FDA put clinical holds on two of Idenix's drugs last year, making this a very unwelcome trend at the company as competitors move ahead in the oral hep-C market.

  • [By Sean Williams]

It certainly wasn't smiles for everyone on the clinical front, though, as Idenix Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: IDIX  ) took a late-week 31% tumble after announcing that the FDA was requesting additional safety information about its preclinical investigational hepatitis-C drug, IDX20963. As my Foolish colleague Brian Orelli noted, it's not exactly clear what information the FDA is looking for, but this inquiry puts a hold on Idenix's starting clinical trials until it satisfies the requests of the FDA. This marks the third pipeline candidate that's been placed on clinical hold in just the past year and could be the last straw for fed-up investors.

Margins matter. The more CONMED (Nasdaq: CNMD  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong CONMED's competitive position could be.

Credit Suisse Sees Steel Prices Nearing Bottom, Downgrades US Steel Anyway

Ever have those moments where you read an analyst report and are left scratching your head? Well, Credit Suisse’s downgrades of US Steel (X) and Nucor (NUE) today fit the bill.

ASSOCIATED PRESS

First, let Credit Suisse analyst Nathan Littlewood and team explain why they not only downgraded US Steel and Nucor, but lowered their EBITDA forecasts for AK Steel (AKS), Commercial Metals (CMC) and Steel Dynamics (STLD), as well:

We are downgrading 2014 earnings estimates for all US steel names, and downgrading ratings on US Steel to Underperform and Nucor  to Neutral. We expect MarQ14 guidance from [AK Steel, Steel Dynamics and Nucor] released next week may serve as a catalyst for the rest of the street to follow suit. Although the US domestic demand situation is unquestionably improving, we simply do not feel that this is sufficient to offset slower EM growth and the influence of imports that this implies.

In our view, X’s recent outperformance of its closest peer [ArcelorMittal (MT), and the iron ore price, will reverse over coming months. Unlike 2012/13 when iron ore prices rebounded to $160/t post the destock, we see the iron ore price settling at a structurally lower level in 2H2014. Finally we note that X needs a ~4x increase in the pace of its 'Project Carnegie' initiatives in order to maintain its position on the US domestic cost curve

So far, so good. Now the puzzling part: Littlewood writes that the "Buying Opportunity Might Be Closer than We Thought." He explains:

Although we are cautious the steel names near term, we can see signs that a floor in pricing may not be too far away. CRU's assessment of US domestic HRC pricing is now approaching the actual import price as implied by DoC trade data.

I'll leave you to puzzle that one out.

As an aside, Littlewood also states a preference for Steel Dynamics over Nucor. He explains why:

[Nucor] usually defines the top of [Steel Dynamics'] valuation range and [Commercial Metals] the bottom. Right now [Steel Dynamics] is trading at the bottom of this range. Whilst we continue to admire [Nucor] for its raw materials strategy and see it as best-in-class in terms of business quality, the valuation differential between [Nucor] and [Steel Dynamics] has become too big to ignore.

Shares of US Steel have dropped 1.2% to $24.11 at 3:41 p.m., while Nucor has fallen 0.4% to $48.44, AK Steel has gained 1.2% to $6.16, Commercial Metals has dipped 0.2% to $18.74, Steel Dynamics has ticked up 0.1% to $16.56 and ArcelorMittal has gained 0.3% to $14.90.

General Motors: Think Reputational Risk, Not Financial

When General Motors (GM) was forced to recall a bunch of cars with a potentially fatal defect, I’m sure it hoped to get the work done and the issue moved into the past quickly. That’s not gonna happen.

AP

Congress has decided to investigate why it took so long to respond to a defect that has been linked to 13 deaths. The New York Times has the details:

A House committee has started an investigation into the response by General Motors and federal safety regulators to complaints about faulty ignition switches that have been linked to 13 deaths, officials said on Monday.

An Energy and Commerce subcommittee will hold hearings that will most likely include the automaker and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, although the date has not been set, said Charlotte Baker, a committee spokeswoman.

RBC Capital Markets’ Joseph Spak considers the damage:

In our view, the immediate financial impact is insignificant; however, there could be some reputational risk which could impact share.  The latter, to be frank, is hard to quantify…

Remember while this was old (pre-bankruptcy) GM, the consumer won't differentiate.  And it does appear that GM employees have known about the risk for a while, so it does seem there is a failure to act somewhere along the way.   GM clearly has a test on their hands and how they manage it will likely impact the reputational risk.  In term of previous comps for reputational risk, there are mixed results from large visible recalls.  [Toyota Motor (TM)] lost share in their sudden acceleration recalls towards the end of last decade. [Ford Motor (F)] saw less of an impact with their Ford Explorer recall in the early 2000's.  Obviously the longer this stays in the headlines the worse it could be for GM

JPMorgan’s Ryan Brinkman and team note that Delphi Automotive (DLPH) could be in the firing line. They explain:

We learned that Delphi is the supplier in question of the ignition switches [General Motors] is recalling on 1.6 mn affected vehicles. The ignition switch was produced by a predecessor entity to the current post-bankruptcy Delphi Automotive, potentially shielding the supplier from liability, but we nevertheless expect Delphi to incur costs to assist [General Motors] in fixing the affected vehicles, which we believe both [General Motors] and Delphi are committed to doing in as expeditious a manner as possible. Delphi management commented that a typical ignition switch is an inexpensive part, sometimes costing as little as $2 to $5 to produce (suggesting a total recall cost of ~$3.2 mn to $8.0 mn, ex-labor, or ~$0.01 to $0.02 of EPS), and that swapping the ignition for a new one is not labor intensive – potentially done in only a few minutes. This contrasts with other recalls with which Delphi has been involved, which can sometimes necessitate replacement of a costlier component or one that is in a hard-to-reach area, such as deep within an engine, and was described as relatively straight-forward.

Shares of General Motors fell 5.2% to $35.18 today, while Ford Motor (F) dropped 1.4% to $15.30, Toyota Motor (TM) declined 0.8% to $112.46 and Honda Motor (HMC) gained 0.9% to $36.89. Delphi Automotive rose 1.4% to $67.77.

Advisors' Opinion:

The role of the barge can't be underestimated. Barge receipts increased more than two percentage points year over year, and this is a great place for investors to look for opportunity. Companies with maritime resources benefit from this trend, as well as growth in exports. Three such companies that are worth a look are:

Kirby Corporation (NYSE: KEX  ) , which operates 30% of the coastal tank barges in the U.S. Oiltanking Partners (NYSE: OILT  ) , which has storage capacity of 12.1 million barrels and six deepwater docks on the Houston Ship Channel Martin Midstream Partners (NASDAQ: MMLP  ) , which operates a large fleet of inland barges and controls 31 marine terminals

These companies won't be the only winners, but they are a good place to start your research.
