What do BG Medicine, Inc. (NASDAQ:BGMD) and Pentair, Ltd. (NYSE:PNR) have in common? Most investors would say absolutely nothing. BGMD is a small cap medical diagnostics company, while PNR is a large cap industrial equipment manufacturer. Those are worlds that simply never collide. Advisors' Opinion:

There has been a great deal of concern about the United States suffering from a "lost generation" as Japan has now for several. For investors in oil, this has certainly not been the case: A recent article in The Wall Street Journal noted that oil has risen 310% (Brent Crude) over the last decade. The future looks equally promising for investments in the sector such as ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP), Suncor Energy (NYSE: SU), Americas Petrogas (BOE.V), and Octagon 88 (OTCBB: OCTX).

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

To put this growth in perspective, ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP  ) , a more diversified global oil and gas producer, expects to grow its oil and gas production by just 3%-5% over this same timeframe. However, 60% of its projected production growth will come from its U.S. onshore assets. The growth is truly remarkable, as the company expects to grow its Eagle Ford production by 130,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, or 16% annually, while growing Bakken production by 45,000 BOE/d ,or 18% annually. And last but not least, the company sees its Permian Basin production growing by 40,000 BOE/d, or 7% annually. Clearly, the U.S. is one of the key growth drivers for ConocoPhillips over the next few years.

With close proximity to the ever-important Asia Pacific market, LNG facilities located in Australia will have a leg up exporting to the region. The bulk of the facilities there will be coming on line between 2016 and 2017, putting them ahead of the plans of most American companies right now. The one problem for Australian companies, though, is cost. High labor costs and delays have put several projects well over budget, and companies like ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP  ) have started to bow out of Australia because the economics of the projects is becoming less attractive.

The first thing to realize about StoneMor is that arcane and flexible accounting rules make it important to dig beneath its GAAP earnings. Growth throughout the industry has been substantial, as up-and-coming Carriage Services (NYSE: CSV  ) continued to stay on pace for double-digit sales growth as it rapidly expands its reach. Even well-established player Matthews International (NASDAQ: MATW  ) managed to grow revenue by nearly 14% in the quarter that ended in March, although its earnings fell slightly from the year-ago quarter. Still, StoneMor's sales haven't been able to rise as quickly as its peers, with its previous report including just a 6% gain in revenue.
